Background of the Study
Traditional medicine has long been an integral component of healthcare in Nigeria, particularly in regions where modern medical services are scarce or culturally less acceptable. In Imo State, traditional healers and indigenous health practices coexist with modern healthcare systems, providing an alternative source of medical care for many communities. Traditional medicine encompasses herbal remedies, spiritual healing, and other culturally specific treatments that are deeply rooted in the local heritage (Okoro, 2023). These practices often serve as the first line of defense for individuals seeking treatment for various ailments. Despite the widespread use of traditional medicine, its role in public health is frequently underappreciated and under-researched. Evidence suggests that traditional medicine can complement modern healthcare by offering accessible, affordable, and culturally acceptable treatment options, particularly for chronic and common illnesses (Aminu, 2024). However, challenges such as the lack of standardized practices, potential safety concerns, and limited integration with conventional healthcare remain significant. Understanding the contribution of traditional medicine to public health in Imo State is essential for developing strategies that harness its strengths while addressing its limitations, ultimately improving health outcomes across diverse populations (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Imo State, the use of traditional medicine remains prevalent, yet its integration into the formal public health system is limited. Many individuals rely on traditional remedies due to cultural beliefs, cost factors, and accessibility, even when modern healthcare options are available. The unregulated nature of traditional practices raises concerns about the efficacy, safety, and quality of treatments. Additionally, the lack of formal collaboration between traditional healers and modern healthcare providers creates gaps in patient care, potentially leading to delayed diagnoses and treatment complications. These issues are compounded by limited research on the impact of traditional medicine on public health outcomes. Without clear guidelines and integration strategies, the potential benefits of traditional medicine may be overshadowed by risks, and public health policies may fail to address the realities of healthcare-seeking behaviors in Imo State (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the utilization of traditional medicine in Imo State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of traditional healing practices on public health outcomes.
  3. To propose strategies for integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare systems.

Research Questions

  1. How prevalent is the use of traditional medicine in Imo State?
  2. What are the perceived benefits and risks associated with traditional healing practices?
  3. How can traditional medicine be integrated effectively into the public health system?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The widespread use of traditional medicine is significantly associated with cultural and economic factors.
  2. Traditional healing practices have a measurable impact on the management of common illnesses.
  3. Integration of traditional and modern healthcare systems will improve overall public health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on communities in Imo State where traditional medicine is widely practiced. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with traditional healers and patients, and reviews of existing literature. Limitations include variability in traditional practices and potential resistance from stakeholders.
